Safeway partners with The Food Basket to fight hunger

Safeway Hawaii stores are partnering with each island’s local food bank to launch the “Help Us End Hunger” food drive this holiday season. Hawaii Island stores support The Food Basket.

The effort makes it easy for shoppers to donate to local food banks by filling grocery bags with items that the food banks need most. The specially packed grocery bags containing Safeway and Kraft food products such as canned tuna, peanut butter, pasta and canned vegetables. The bags are available for $10 through Dec. 25.

In addition, Safeway stores across the state also offer the “Check Out Hunger” program that allows customers to make a minimum donation of $2.81 at any checkout stand. On the Big Island, proceeds go to The Food Basket.

Hawaii Calls Restaurant adds hydroponic herb garden

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort and Spa’s Executive Sous Chef Jayson Kanekoa has added a hydroponic herb garden to the grounds fronting Hawaii Calls Restaurant and Lounge. In addition to basil, which is currently growing, Kanekoa plans to grow and harvest rosemary, shiso, mint, sweet potato and taro. For more information, call 886-6789.

First Hawaiian Bank donations hit $10M

First Hawaiian Bank has contributed over $2.5 million each year for the past four years to achieve its goal of donating $10 million to charities. The bank, its foundation and employees annually donate to more than 400 charities.

Sea Quest reaches 25th anniversary milestone

Sea Quest Rafting and Snorkeling, which offers tours to some of the best snorkeling sites on Hawaii Island, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this month. Having started with a single vessel, Sea Quest now features a fleet of five rigid-hull inflatable rafts and three snorkel tours originating from Keauhou Bay. Mauna Kea Resort has completed a multimillion dollar refresh of its two luxury resorts. Eighty-five beachfront guestrooms and suites at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel have been refreshed in a contemporary Hawaiian motif featuring high-end furnishings, deluxe bedding, and deep soaking tubs with windows that face the ocean.
